Natural cold protection for garden plants

This winter protection cover helps prevent frost damage to plants and protects them from drying out caused by cold, wind and sun. The cover can be quickly placed over the plants and then secured with a tie cord or a decorative ribbon from the Windhager range, for example made of jute, coconut fibre or sheep’s wool. With a weight of 50 g/m², the fleece provides good protection at low temperatures.

How to prepare your plants optimally for winter

A winter fleece helps protect potted plants, (young) trees and shrubs in the garden from frost and wind during the cold season. In late autumn, just before winter begins, the plants should be well wrapped. Branches and bulky plants can be tied together with a cord – for example with the coconut tree tie from the Windhager range – before wrapping them with the winter fleece. Afterwards, wrapping the plants with the fleece is quick and easy. Make sure that the entire plant is covered and that no branches or leaves remain visible. For optimal protection, the fleece should be wrapped several times around the whole plant. Then secure it with a tie cord so that the plants remain reliably protected throughout the winter. Suitable tying accessories are also available in the Windhager range. In the case of potted plants, the pot should also be protected. This can be done quickly and easily with a pot protector from the Windhager range. For all-round protection, the plant pot can additionally be placed on an insulating base.

Useful information about winter protection

Fertilising: Fertilise your plants for the last time in autumn with organic fertiliser and in summer with mineral fertiliser. As fertiliser stimulates plant growth, fresh shoots may otherwise develop even in late autumn. These young shoots are more susceptible to frost and plants therefore often suffer damage in winter.

Watering: A winter fleece reduces water evaporation inside and also protects against drying out caused by frost or wind. Nevertheless, plants also need water in winter and must be watered regularly. Watering is best done on mild days at temperatures above 0°C.

Note: There are particularly sensitive plants which – depending on the winter and the geographical location – cannot overwinter outdoors or in a winter protection tent despite winter protection. They must spend the cold season in a frost-free, sheltered place. In general, in extreme weather conditions, simple winter protection cannot guarantee that plants will come through the winter undamaged. If in doubt, consult a gardening expert.

Good protection can also be sustainable. Environmentally conscious gardeners no longer have to do without sheeting and fleeces. To control weeds, protect sensitive plants from frost or protect tomatoes from rain and pests, whether directly on the ground or in raised beds: you (almost) can't do without them in the garden.
